Why Should You Have Asbestos Removed?

Asbestos fibers are naturally occurring mineral fibers and are indestructible which are known to be used in thousands of building products from the 1900’s up until 1985 in Canada. When asbestos becomes hazardous when it is deteriorated or disturbed. Intact and undisturbed asbestos materials are not a hazard. When asbestos is in poor condition, the fibers are easily released can cause adverse health effects to occupants. The purpose of the abatement clean-up process is to eliminate the asbestos fibers from the occupied space and to remove the contaminated materials in a controlled and best-practiced manner and following the Ontario Regulation 278/05. The goal of Asbestos Abatement is to remove and clean contaminated materials in a way that prevents the spread of asbestos fiber contaminants from leaving the affected area and entering an occupied or non-abatement area while protecting the health of the workers and occupants. Asbestos is heavily regulated throughout Canada, moreover, Ontario has its own regulation in dealing with asbestos in construction – Ontario Regulation 278/05. Every precaution should be taken when coming into contact with potential asbestos materials. Materials should be tested by an accredited laboratory and verified. Once the asbestos materials have been tested, depending on the type of building materials it is prudent to have a third party consultant/engineer develop a risk assessment and removal plan that best suits your needs. Once a risk assessment report and scope is developed, SLC Environmental can work with you and your needs to completing the project in a timely manner. At SLC Environmental we have worked with various government agencies, property management firms, commercial, industrial and residential clients.

Our Asbestos Fiber Containment Process

When work is being done in an area containing asbestos, the affected area is sealed off from the rest of the structure with duct tape and plastic sheeting, and the air conditioning and heating systems are turned off. SLC Environmental professionals use a hand sprayer to wet asbestos material and prevent fibers from becoming airborne during removal. We clean up asbestos with wet sponges and mops or high-efficiency vacuums designed to capture small particles. All asbestos-containing materials are then carefully sealed in secure plastic bags. Once asbestos abatement is complete, air sampling is recommended to be completed by a 3rd party Environmental Consultant carried to ensure air clearance is achieved, and that your home or office is safe.
